3 Story Angles

We've done the research. These are the angles our data supports.

Story Angle 1
The Contractor Quote Lottery: Within a Single Trade, Our Scores Run From Fair to Severely Overpriced
Homeowners rarely see what anyone else was quoted, so they have no way to tell a fair number from a bad one. Our scores show how wide that range is inside a single trade. Across 756 auto quotes the fairness scores carry a standard deviation of 24 points, with 55% scoring below 50 and 22% scoring 70 or better. Across 305 roofing quotes the fairness scores carry a standard deviation of 25 points, with 43% scoring below 50 and 30% scoring 70 or better. Across 249 plumbing quotes the fairness scores carry a standard deviation of 25 points, with 47% scoring below 50 and 32% scoring 70 or better. These are the dispersion of QuoteScore's own fairness scores within a category, computed live over every scored quote in the categories with the largest samples โ€” not a price variance. We do not claim two quotes were for identical work: nothing in our data establishes that two jobs are comparable, so we do not report a price spread. Reproduce these from the benchmark CSV or ask us for the query.
๐Ÿ“Š Data hook: "41% of contractor quotes analyzed by QuoteScore scored below 50 out of 100, and quotes scoring below 70 carry an estimated overpayment of $2,890 on average."
Story Angle 2
AI vs. the Contractor: How a Free Tool Is Closing the Information Gap That Lets Contractors Overcharge
Contractors have always had an information advantage: they know what things cost, homeowners don't. QuoteScore is one of several tools attempting to democratize pricing data โ€” using AI to analyze a quote photo and benchmark it against thousands of real-world jobs. The tool has analyzed over 3,500 quotes since launch, scored 41% of them below 50 out of 100, and estimates an average overpayment of $2,890 on the quotes it scores below 70. The question isn't whether AI can spot a bad quote โ€” it's whether homeowners will actually use it.

Story Angle 3
What a Second Opinion Is Worth: The Homeowners Who Never Get One
The homeowner who collects three quotes finds out what a job costs. The one who collects a single quote finds out nothing, and has no way to tell which situation they are in. Our own scores show how much room that leaves: in auto, the category with our lowest average, 756 analyzed quotes average 49 out of 100. Across every category, quotes we score below 70 carry an estimated overpayment of $2,890. We do not track what anyone does after they read their score, so we cannot tell you how many renegotiated or walked away โ€” only what the quotes themselves looked like when they arrived.

"41% of the contractor quotes we analyze score below 50 out of 100, and the ones we score below 70 carry an estimated overpayment of $2,890 on average. Homeowners have always been at an information disadvantage. We're trying to close that gap."

"The pricing data is real. We built a tool that does in 60 seconds what most homeowners never do: checks every single line item against what the same work actually costs in their area."
โ€” QuoteScore team
"Auto is the worst-scoring category we see: 756 analyzed quotes averaging 49 out of 100. The information gap is widest wherever the work is complex enough that the homeowner cannot price it themselves."
โ€” QuoteScore team, on category data
"We don't tell you to not pay the quote. We tell you exactly what's overpriced and by how much, and we give you the negotiation language to fix it โ€” line by line, so you can push back on a specific number instead of walking away from the contractor."
