๐Ÿ“… Best Time of Year to Hire Each Contractor (And Save 15-30%)

Contractor pricing is not fixed. It follows demand cycles, and if you can time your project to hit a contractor's slow season, you can frequently negotiate 15-30% off their standard rates. Here is the seasonal breakdown by trade.

HVAC: Book in Fall or Early Spring

The worst time to need HVAC work is also the most likely time you will need it: July heat waves and January cold snaps. Emergency calls during peak seasons can add 25-50% to standard pricing, and wait times stretch to weeks.

The sweet spot: September through November for AC work. February through March for heating systems. Most HVAC companies offer off-season discounts of 10-20% and will install during slow periods when they can schedule around you. Replacing a functioning but aging system before it fails during a heat wave is almost always cheaper than replacing it as an emergency during one.

Roofing: Winter or Early Spring

Roofing companies are slammed in late summer and fall, particularly in storm-prone regions after hail season. Late November through February is the slow season for most roofing contractors in non-frozen climates. Discounts of 10-20% are common, and you will get better scheduling and more attention from the crew.

In cold climates where winter installation is not feasible, early spring (March-April) before storm season is the next best window. Avoid June through September if at all possible, particularly in the Southeast and Midwest.

Painting: Early Spring or Late Fall

Exterior painting requires dry weather and temperatures above 50 degrees. The optimal window is April-May (before summer heat) and September-October (before fall rains). In the South, early spring and fall both work. In the North, the window is shorter.

Interior painting has no real seasonal constraint, which means winter is the best time to book it. Painters are slow from November through February, and you can often negotiate pricing or get better scheduling flexibility. Contractors may discount interior jobs 10-15% in slow winter months.

Landscaping and Hardscaping: Late Fall or Winter

Landscapers are busiest in spring and early summer when everyone wants their yard done at once. Late fall landscaping (October-November) often comes with better pricing and faster scheduling. Hardscaping projects (patios, retaining walls, walkways) can typically be done any time the ground is not frozen, and winter projects in mild climates are often discounted 15-20%.

Tree removal is actually cheapest in winter when trees are dormant and easier to work with. Summer emergency removal (storm damage, disease) costs significantly more.

Plumbing: Avoid the Holidays

Plumbing does not have as strong a seasonal cycle as outdoor trades, but there are patterns. Emergency calls spike during holidays (Thanksgiving is notoriously the busiest day of the year for plumbers due to kitchen drains). Routine plumbing work scheduled mid-week in winter months tends to get faster service at standard rates.

Do not wait for a slow leak to become a crisis. Booking routine plumbing maintenance in a slow period means you get better pricing and a plumber who is not rushing between emergencies.

General Contractors: Avoid Spring Surge

General contractors book up fast in spring as homeowners come out of winter with project lists. If you want a good GC at reasonable rates, December through February is when they are hungriest for work. Projects starting in January or February often get lower overhead allocation and more contractor attention simply because there is less competition for their time.

How to Use Seasonality in Negotiations

You do not need to mention that you know it is their slow season. Just ask: "Do you have any flexibility on price if we can schedule in January?" Most contractors who are slow will negotiate. If they say no, at least you know demand is still strong enough that they do not need to discount.

Another tactic: offer a flexible schedule. "I am not in a rush. Let me know if a slot opens up that works well for your schedule." This signals you are willing to take their downtime, and often results in better pricing without you having to ask explicitly.
