BEFORE YOU BOOK THE MOVERS

Is your moving quote fair? Check it before you book.

Moving estimates swing widely between companies for the same move, and the cheapest one is not always the one you end up paying. Check the price and the paperwork before you put down a deposit.

Know which kind of estimate you have

Binding estimate

The price is fixed for the items and services listed. If you add items or services, the mover can charge for those, so check the inventory on the estimate matches what you are moving.

Non-binding estimate

The final bill is based on actual weight and services. For an interstate move, federal rules say the mover cannot require you to pay more than 110% of a non-binding estimate at delivery; any balance is billed later. A low non-binding number is where most moving bill surprises start.

Red flags on a moving estimate

For moves across state lines, look the mover up by USDOT number with FMCSA and read its Protect Your Move guide: fmcsa.dot.gov/protect-your-move. Moves within one state are usually regulated by the state, so check your state's transportation or consumer protection office.
